Nick Silverio - devote his life to saving infants from being abandoned

A Safe Haven for Newborns, a not for profit 501©3 was created in 2001 by Nick Silverio, a man whose deep compassion and love for children led him to devote his life to saving infants from being abandoned. He created the organization to honor the life of his beloved wife Gloria, who was killed in a car accident by a speeding driver in 1999. Nick and Gloria were married for 32 years, and although they had no children, they were devoted to children and served as Godparents to fourteen.

A Safe Haven for Newborns is offered to everyone, especially young women across Florida who are hiding their pregnancy, who might otherwise abandon their unwanted newborn, an unthinkable act, but an act of panicked desperation by mothers who believe they themselves to be abandoned, without support or resources.

“We are dedicated to saving newborns from the ultimate in infant abuse, abandonment thru education, grass roots community involvement, direct assistance and our 24/7 confidential, multilingual helpline… We support distressed and often desperate pregnant girls and women from all walks of life. Everyone is helped. We are never judgmental.

The lifeline of our organization is our statewide, confidential, 24/7 multilingual helpline. The callers have been as young as 13 years old and as old as 41. Our work is essential; therefore, we work every single day 24/7 even during the COVID-19 Pandemic, continuing to save lives, assist women in need and create greater awareness to this life saving program. Our outreach is in all 67 Florida counties as well as other states.

That assistance is in the form of referrals to counseling, shelters, maternity homes, help for abuse issues, suicide calls, health related issues, providing baby items and connection to Medicaid and other government programs and confidentially placing their newborn with a staff member at a designated Safe Haven facility: Hospitals & 24/7 staffed Fire/EMS Stations, identified with A Safe Haven for Newborns signage.

Safe Haven has gained national attention and become a prototype, setting the standard for affiliated programs. The organization has provided web-based training for Hospital & Fire/EMS personnel and has created awareness that there is help available through public service announcements, billboards, community presentations, and the social media.

Nick says “We are overwhelmed and overjoyed when a precious life is saved, conversely, heartbroken if a newborn is abandoned.” Without A Safe Haven for Newborns Services and National 24/7 referral helpline, many if not most, of the 368 babies saved to date from abandonment would not be here today. They all now have a future, lots of live with their forever families.

To quote Mark Twain; “The most two most important days in your life, are the day you are born and the day you find out why”. I found out why. -Nick

Nutritionist. Bluffton University, MS In today's world, people's eating and exercise patterns have changed, and it is often lifestyle that is the cause of many diet-related illnesses. I believe that each of us is unique – what works for one does not help another. What is more, it can even be harmful. I am interested in food psychology, which studies a person's relationship with their body and food, explains our choices and desires for specific products, the difficulty of maintaining optimal body weight, as well as the influence of various internal and external factors on appetite. I'm also an avid vintage car collector, and currently, I'm working on my 1993 W124 Mercedes.
