The Out There Web Designs Story

In 2010 a friend came to me and asked if I could build him a website, not knowing anything about web design I immediately said “sure thing” and promptly figured out how to do it.  I started Out There Web Designs shortly thereafter with a partner. I started with very small projects, my first clients were all word of mouth. I found some business forums and started posting and answering questions from others, gaining me a few more clients. During all this I continued to learn more web design skills and starting diving into the fun world of SEO. As I learned SEO I started selling that as an additional service.

This was a part time gig at first, as I gained more clients I discovered a networking group that I quickly joined and grew my contacts to find higher quality clients, leading me to my first large client. I landed them on building a system that their current web designer couldn’t build. This one required a software developer, which I am not. I talked to a friend of mine and got him interested in helping me with this. We built out this system that we maintain to this day.

I was never of the mindset of “One and Done”, I wanted clients that would stay with me long term. A lot of my early clients are still with me. Others have moved on but still refer work to me.

As my client list grew I needed to add people to my team to increase my quality. I brought on my web designer. She was a Spanish teacher who recently lost her job & wanted to learn web design. I started teaching her what I knew and turned her loose to learn more on her own. She’s extremely creative and she does the majority of all our new projects.

We added additional members to our team so all our main services are covered along with a Marketing Director. With all the pieces now in place we can go to a whole new level.

What Types of Challenges does the Business Face?

The biggest challenge we face is with technology constantly changing. Websites are designed differently than they were 2 years ago, SEO is always changing due to the search engines constantly making adjustments to their search algorithms and we only get notified of the large changes. Paid Ads campaigns are consistently in flux requiring constant monitoring and regular adjustments. But honestly, that just makes it interesting, we are constantly learning new things and implementing those changes to improve our services.

Opportunities for the Future

The opportunities are endless. All new businesses need a website and no, they don’t need to spend thousands of dollars to get one created. Startups can begin with small websites using free tools readily available. When they have the budget to invest in a professional website then they should do so.

Businesses with existing websites should review them from time to time to ensure everything is working correctly & the software it is based on is up to date. I’ve dealt with too many businesses that rarely if ever look at their site and it shows, broken links, dated images, contact form not sending inquiries, etc. Listen, you spent a lot of money on getting it built, not maintaining or checking on it is like buying a car and never changing the oil, how can you possibly think it’s going to be perfect forever?

A website is an investment, not an expense. Working with the right designer can get you a good return. A website should pay for itself in a fairly short period of time. Done right and it will. Most web designers are artists and it shows in the sites they build, but a great looking website that does not convert traffic is pointless and a waste of money. A website needs to look great and get you business, only a web designer that has some marketing knowledge and an eye for design can design & build those.

My Advice to others about business

If you have a passion for something, find a way to make it work. Work with a coach, find a mentor, network, make connections. You can create a career out of almost anything by just thinking differently than others. You can absolutely start from nothing and create a business, no matter what anyone says. I couldn’t tell you how many entrepreneurs I’ve met that have started new businesses during the pandemic, they lost their jobs and needed to keep the roof over their head. We’re not talking about people with business degrees here, these are people who had an idea and decided to take a crack at making it a business and did so. Trust me, if they could do it so can you.

Always learn from your mistakes, never make the same one twice, be creative and make entirely new ones! And if you find yourself to be the smartest person in the room, find another room.
