Founder’s/Owner’s story and what motivated them to start the business
I fell in love with Haiti I read a book in HS in Cuba titled The Kingdom of this World by Alejo Carpentier. I was 17yo old then. Three years later, at the age of 20, I hopped on a boat with 18 other people and escaped Cuba. That was in 1991. Later in life, when I was finishing my doctoral degree a friend posted on Facebook that she was moving to Haiti and I realized that this was my opportunity to visit the country that I had falling in love many years ago. When I went to Haiti, I found out about the restavek problem that exists there. I had never been a child slave, but I had experienced sexual abuse as a child. So, I figured that if I could use that episode to save a couple of children from having to go through all the trauma I experienced growing up, I had done my part for making the world a better place. Two months after going to Haiti for the first time, I created the Renand Foundation. That was in 2015.
The challenges the business/market is facing
Raising money to keep all our programs running and keep helping children in Haiti.
The opportunities the business/market is facing
We are making a difference in the lives of those who need it the most. Children in Haiti that would otherwise not have money to study and chances are they could become victims of child slavery and human trafficking (restaveks)
Advice to others about business
Doing what we do is hard. It requires passion, dedication, and commitment. However, I would not change it for the world, because it is my life purpose. If you find your calling in life, follow it!
It would be great if you could include images of the founder and the business. Please compress them as much as possible. Videos are also welcome.
