Studio Wae’s make an impact on natural resource extraction by converting residual flows into scalable and beautiful products-Tynke van den Heuvel

Maximum impact, zero waste

Studio Wae’s vision is to make an impact on natural resource extraction by converting residual flows into scalable and beautiful products. We think it is important that everyone realizes that waste can have a positive value. By using production waste sources, we extend the life cycle of these sources. Studio Wae makes circular paving made of 76% recycled raw materials in various geometric designs. Where the Cityscapes catches the eye the most. This tile is climate adaptive. In addition, there is a social workshop where handmade modular rugs and flooring are made. Choose your own color, shape and size to create a unique rug that fits in any space. The individual tiles are connected to each other with a unique click system, giving you complete freedom to create your own composition.

Founder

Tynke van den Heuvel founded Studio Wae in 2017. She worked for her father as a scrap dealer for 14 years. Here she gained a lot of material knowledge and learned that by paying attention to the material you can create a positive value from waste. Especially in this day and age it is becoming increasingly clear that raw materials are not infinite and that reuse is a must. Keep discarded materials in the loop. But make it attractive to the market on aesthetics. She started with a waste fraction of her fathers

recycling company of glass for which there was no recycling process. This had to be paid for to deposit it. So she has delved into glass material with the following questions: what is glass made of? What are the properties of glass? And that is where the search began to include this fraction into a product.

Glass is made of sand and a lot af sand is used in concrete. after a long study of raw material ratios a recipe for circular concrete was born. At that time 65% reused resources where achieved. Now Studio Wae no longer uses glass in its recipe, most of its circular resources come from rubble from construction and old paving. The recipe is 76% reused resources now.

In 2018 she was asked by a circular demolition contractor whether she might have a solution for used carpet tiles. Every year, approximately 60 million tons of carpet tiles are processed as waste in Europe.

She then developed a modular rug with a click system. Studio Wae now only uses production waste from large carpet tile producers. This is new material but with a tuft, shear or color flaw. This material was labeled as waste, but in this way we extend the lifecycle of waste. No new raw materials are used for our products.

“Our customers buy our products because they are beautiful with a story and special and as an extra it is sustainable. In addition, we believe that everyone who wants to work has the right to work against a fair wage. So we also make an impact there for people who find it difficult to find a job because of, for example, a language barrier.

Circular concrete

Studio Wae has released The Right Wae collection which includes more than 60 different sizes of

pavement. Everything is made from 76% recycled raw materials. Normally, old pavement is also broken and used as stabilization under the asphalt. But then it’s out of the loop. The right Wae collection pavement remains in the circular loop and can also be reused as a raw material at the end of its lifespan. The Cityscapes is a tribute to M.C. Escher and this year we launched The Box. In which

geometry and optical illusion are central. Create your own Wae!

Circular rugs and flooring

Our unique rugs with geometric shapes are made from 100% production waste from major carpet tile producers in the Netherlands. Partnerships have been concluded with these pioneers in the field of sustainability to extend their lifecycle of waste. Choose your own color, shape and size to create a unique rug that fits in any space. The individual tiles are connected to each other with a unique click system, giving you complete freedom to create your own composition. We have over 20.000 m2 of carpettiles in stock in over 500 colors to choose from. Or go for The Better Wae collection our circular flooring and cover your entire space with our modular tiles, here too you can choose from our grant stock of different colors and shapes.

Social impact

The production of our circular floor solutions takes place in Utrecht and is carried out by people with

limited employment in our own workshop. Our mission is to offer as many Syrian status holders as

possible a job, so that we can offer them a solid foundation to build a future in the Netherlands.

Challenges and opportunities

To make a real impact, we need large projects. This often involves project developers or government projects. They demand all kinds of expensive certifications and labels on products that are written

entirely on linear products. For a startup, this is a major investment prior to the project and then it is not yet certain whether the project can actually be carried out. We have chosen to take on this risk and can show very good figures. For example, 1 m2 of non-sustainable flooring is compared to 50 m2 of Wae flooring. Our concrete also has the lowest environmental costs per m2 and the highest circularity to date. In this way we have been able to achieve the following impact so far. Nearly 600 tons of Co2 reduction and approximately 4000 tons of raw materials reuse. This of course offers opportunities because

especially large companies and the government have sustainability objectives that we perfectly match with products that are easy to implement. Our products are sustainable, circular, and made with social impact. We have been able to achieve the objectives for 2021 for Prorail (our railway company) alone. And we are of course very proud of that.

Advice for others

Waste does not exist. In product development, look at which raw materials are thrown away at large companies and enter into a partnership. Collaboration is the new business model and don’t just think in terms of turnover, but also highlight the humane aspect within your company. That radiates in your products and the story of your product.
