Steadiwear is a Canadian AgeTech start-up that has developed a battery-free glove to help those who suffer from essential tremors. Essential tremor is a neurological disorder that causes involuntary hand tremors. The condition affects approximately 7 million people in the United States and typically begins after age 40. Although essential tremor is not life-threatening, it can be debilitating and cause significant social and occupational impairment. There is no cure for essential tremors, but treatment options available can help manage the symptoms. As people live longer and healthier lives, more and more are choosing to aging in place. This trend is driven by several factors, including the desire to maintain independence and control over one’s own life. Moving into a retirement community or assisted living facility is not appealing for many older adults. They prefer staying in their homes, where they can remain close to their friends and families. And as the baby boomer generation enters retirement age, the demand for aging-in-place options will only increase. Fortunately, several companies are now offering products and services that make it easier for people to age in place, and Steadiwear is a great example of such a company. As the aging population continues to grow, it’s clear that aging in place is here to stay.

The Steadi-Two is a wearable device that uses a cutting edge and battery-free technology inspired by earthquake design to reduce hand tremors in Essential tremors. The device is non-invasive & is designed to improve the Quality Of Life of the end user and increase their confidence & independence.

Founder’s/Owner’s story and what motivated them to start the business

Steadiwear was founded in 2015 by Mark and Emile, two entrepreneurs passionate about revolutionizing the tremor space. Mark has a background in structural engineering, while Emile’s background is in marketing and management. The two families were introduced as neighbors in 2014. After discovering that both their families suffer from tremors, they united under a sense of compassion that fueled their resolve to change the game for Essential tremor sufferers by developing groundbreaking tremor stabilization technology. Steadiwear is the result of its dedication to finding a solution for millions worldwide suffering from tremors. The Steadiwear team is committed to providing the best possible solution for those who suffer from this debilitating condition. The challenges the business/market is facing

Essential tremors (ET) is a neurological condition that causes involuntary shaking in the hands, arms, head, and sometimes other parts of the body. Although it is a relatively common disorder, affecting an estimated 3% of adults worldwide, it remains poorly understood. There are many challenges in research surrounding ET, which makes finding effective treatments difficult. One challenge is that ET is often misdiagnosed or ignored by doctors, leading to delays in diagnosis and treatment. Another challenge is that ET can vary greatly from person to person, making it difficult to study. There is also a lack of animal models that accurately mimic the human condition, making it difficult to test potential therapies. Despite these challenges, researchers are making progress in understanding Essential Tremors and developing new treatments. With continued research, it is hoped that better therapies will be found to help those affected by this condition.

Steadiwear is a medical hardware company that designs and manufactures advanced wearable technologies for people with Essential Tremor. Our mission is to improve the lives of people with these conditions by providing them with the tools they need to live their lives to the fullest. The Steadi-Two is our first production-ready product, and we are working with our manufacturing partner to ensure that it meets the highest quality standards. This process is technically challenging and capital intensive, but we are committed to delivering a product that will improve the lives of those who need it. In 2019, we conducted a beta release to over 300 users for our first generation device, the Steadi-One.

Overall, we learned a great deal from our users. The ideal tremor device must weigh under 1lb and have 1 step to don and adjust. It must be simplified to 1 universal size with a fair price. All this feedback was incorporated into our second generation, the Steadi-Two. We built a new survey to validate some of our findings on usability and price that was circulated to over one thousand tremor sufferers. The Steadi Two is a leading-edge glove that stabilizes the wrist joint using breakthrough magnetic stabilization technology.

Benchtop tests have shown over 80% reduction in tremor amplitude over the entire spectrum of Essential tremors. The system is patent pending in the USA. Steadiwear is changing how people live with neurological disorders, and we are just getting started. We are currently ensuring that the Steadi-Two meets the highest standards of quality. This is the best assistive device treatment for Essential tremors currently on the market, and we can’t wait to have our customers try it out.

The opportunities the business/market is facing

Essential tremor is a neurological condition that causes involuntary hand tremors. The condition affects an estimated 7 million people in the United States and can occur at any age, although it is most common in middle-aged and older adults. Essential tremors can make everyday activities such as writing, eating, and dressing difficult. In severe cases, the tremors may be so severe that they interfere with speech. There is no cure for essential tremors, but there are treatments that can help to reduce the symptoms. Medications, surgery, and therapies such as massage and acupuncture may be recommended depending on the severity of the condition. With treatment, many people with essential tremors can live normal, productive lives.

The Steadi-Two has the potential to improve the quality of life for those who suffer from essential tremors, and it is an exciting new development in assistive technology.

The tremor industry is non-consolidated. There are a variety of solutions for tremor patients, none of which are satisfactory.

– Prescribed medications were never designed for Essential tremors and had many negative side effects. The most recent medication for Essential was released 40 years ago and only worked for around 40% of the population. A few new publications also claim that CBD oils

– Invasive brain surgeries such as Deep Brain Stimulation are effective but expensive and risky.

– Weighted objects that cause wrist strain and smart utensils that are limited to 1 task.

There is a significant gap in the tremor market which creates a major opportunity: The commercialization of a device that is lightweight, compact, affordable, and can target all tremor activities like the Steadi-Two. Early adopters of the Steadi-Two like Jane Gweindl and Betty Faulkner have left great testimonials claiming: “I have just spent a month with the new Steadi-Two glove, and I am delighted. It is light, very effective, easy to put on and take off and I could wear it for hours without problem.” After completing a lot of testing with our early adopters, Steadiwear is confident that the Steadi-Two is a gamechanger in this space.
