The General Motors diet claims to help you lose 15 pounds in 7 days. Although this is possible, it is only temporary, and you will regain weight once you stop following the diet. Besides, it is not backed by science and lacks the body’s essential nutrients.

As the quest for weight loss becomes commoner, several diets become more popular. The GM (General Motors) diet, for instance, promises to help you lose 15 pounds (6.8 kg) in just 7 days. It is a strict diet that controls the types of foods you need to take. Besides, foods like beans are to be avoided because they ‘supposedly have high calories.’ Have you ever wondered whether this diet really works in the long run and if you really should follow it? Treat this article as your informant and use it to know everything about the GM diet, including what it looks like, its advantages, and the downsides.

Understanding the GM diet

Before getting into other minor details, let us know what the GM diet is. It is defined as a strict eating pattern that promises to help you shake off 15 pounds (6.8 kg) in 7 days. Although its proponents claim that the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the FDA are behind its creation, the truth is that the diet’s origin remains unknown.

The GM diet is strict and controls the foods or food groups you need to eat, with each day having its different foods. For instance, days 1 and 2 are exclusively for fruits and vegetables, while day 5 is for tomatoes and large meat chunks. As such, this eating plan is quite restrictive. The diet promises several things, including achieving 15 pounds of weight loss in seven days, detoxifying the body, enhancing the body’s ability to lose fat, and improving digestion.

Moreover, the GM diet relies on the calorie deficit principle to lose weight. This is whereby the body takes fewer calories than it uses the digest the same foods. Besides, it claims that most of the foods in the program are negative-calorie, meaning that they technically have fewer calories than what the body needs to digest them. Although this may sound like it, no scientific studies back these claims. Additionally, the GM diet claims that since most of the foods on its list are high in water, it helps the body detox. The program typically ends in 7 days, but you can follow it repeatedly after 5-7 days to realize your weight loss goals.

What does the diet look like?

It was stated previously that the GM diet is a strict eating plan with specific controlled foods and food groups, and each day has its unique components. Water is a part of this diet, and you need to take 8-12 glasses of water daily if you are following the diet. Besides, it’s optional to participate in exercises, but you cannot work out within the first 3 days of the diet. Additionally, the diet recommends consuming 1- 3 bowls of the GM Wonder Soup prepared from tomatoes, onions, celery, cabbage, and onions to support weight loss. Here is water the diet looks like;

  • Day 1: do only fruits of any type, except bananas. Watermelons are recommended for hydration, and no specific number is specified
  • Day 2: do vegetables of any time and any number, but limit potato consumption to breakfast only
  • Day 3: eat fruits and vegetables of any type in any number but limit potatoes and bananas
  • Day 4: do milk and bananas only. You can drink about 3 glasses of milk and 6 big or 8 small bananas
  • Day 5: take 284 g (10 ounces) of fish, meat, or chicken plus at most 6 large tomatoes and add 2 more glasses of water to clear uric acid and purine. If you are vegan, replace the meat with cottage cheese or brown rice
  • Day 6: is more or less like day 5’s diet. However, you need not eat tomatoes but have to avoid potatoes while eating an unlimited number of vegetables. If you are a vegan, do cottage cheese or brown rice instead of meat and keep the water at 2 glasses more for clearing uric acid
  • Day 7: restrict your meals to fruit juice, brown rice, and vegetables in unlimited amounts

Additional guidelines

The GM diet suggests that you need to avoid beans to lose weight faster because they are high in calories. Besides, sodas, alcohol, and other high-calorie drinks are a must-avoid because they jeopardize the plan. You may take coffee and tea, but without any sweeteners. Lastly, vegans can swap meat with brown rice or cottage cheese.

What are the possible advantages of the GM diet?

The major perk of the GM diet is that it encourages people to take fruits and vegetables. These foods are low in calories and can help lose weight by creating a calorie deficit. Of course, no studies have looked into this diet, but other non-related studies have shown that relying on fruits and non-starchy foods lowers one’s risk of gaining weight.

Moreover, the GM diet discourages taking sugary drinks and beverages, which studies have also shown to cause weight gain. For instance, sodas, alcohols, and the likes are excluded from the diet. Besides, although the diet controls the food groups you can eat in a day, you are free to choose which fruits, vegetables, and meat you like. As such, it is a bit flexible.

The potential downsides of the General Motors diet

Despite the above benefits, the GM diet has several drawbacks, including;

The GM diet may seem like a quick fix to lose weight. However, it is unsustainable in the long run, and one regains weight once he quits following the diet. Besides, even though it allows you to choose the types of fruits, vegetables, and meat you want, it lacks the critical nutrients the body needs, which may render it counterproductive.
